Connecting Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka to the World – German-Based Entrepreneur Dushan Gunabalanasinghe
German-based Sri Lankan entrepreneur Dushan Gunabalanasinghe visits Sri Lanka to promote investment, tourism, and educational collaborations, focusing on Northern and Eastern regions to integrate the country with global markets.
German-based Sri Lankan entrepreneur Dushan Gunabalanasinghe has stated that investment collaborations by the Sri Lankan diaspora are not merely driven by business interests, but are deeply rooted in emotional and patriotic connections to their homeland.
During a recent visit to Sri Lanka, Gunabalanasinghe held constructive discussions with high-level government officials, investment board authorities, and representatives from the education sector. He shared detailed insights into his plans and initiatives aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s international engagement.
International Standard Maritime Transport and Tourism
As the head of Asian cruise operations for the German company TUI Entertainment & Travel (Ocean Cruise Line), Dushan Gunabalanasinghe plans to position Sri Lanka as a competitive tourism hub in the Indian Ocean region.
As part of this initiative, discussions have been held to bring large-scale international cruise ships, capable of carrying 5,000 to 7,000 passengers, to Sri Lanka’s major ports. He is collaborating with Aitken Spence to expand the country’s cruise tourism sector and is also working to connect global premium brands such as The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection with Sri Lanka.
International Collaboration in Education
With a focus on shaping the future of Sri Lankan students, Gunabalanasinghe is implementing various educational initiatives. He has facilitated collaboration between universities in Jaffna (Medicine), Colombo and Rajarata (Tourism), and Moratuwa (Technology & Economics) with German universities to enhance academic partnerships.
Additionally, he has partnered Professor Sampath Fernando of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura with a major university in southern Germany to develop student exchange programs and joint research projects. Local students will also have opportunities to pursue tuition-free education in Germany.
Investment Projects and Economic Progress
“I brought a factory initially planned for India to Sri Lanka based on my personal preference. This will create new employment opportunities,” said Gunabalanasinghe. He has also signed agreements with Cinnamon Hotel Group and Hilton Residences to introduce his products and investments.
He further emphasized, “A country cannot progress solely through international loans. However, global investors are showing interest in Sri Lanka. Our primary goal is to connect the country to the world through investment projects centered on the Northern and Eastern regions.”
Vision for 2027
Gunabalanasinghe aims to fully expand his operations in Sri Lanka by 2027. During his visit, he met with senior government officials, including Kumana Yak of the Presidential Secretariat, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, the Chairman of the Ports Authority, and Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra, to present his future plans.
